The Holy Spirit is surely the least-understood and least-recognised member of the Trinity; but Jesus had promised that his death, resurrection and ascension would enable the Spirit to be experienced on earth in a way never seen before in human history. Jesus said:
"Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him." By this he meant the Spirit, who those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. (John 7: 38-39)
"I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counsellor to be with you forever - the Spirit of truth." (John 14: 16-17)
In the Book of Acts, the Holy Spirit emerges from the shadows to take up this pivotal role, as God’s work of building a people for himself (in the creation of the Church) reaches its final stage - at least, before the return of Christ. In Acts 8-11, we will see how this work began to spread beyond the confines of the small group of apostles in Jerusalem to reach the whole of Judea and Samaria, and then began to incorporate "even the Gentiles" (Acts 11: 18) - that is, even people like you and me!
Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)
